Buying jewellery for a woman is a perfect thought as all women love a bit of sparkle and glamour. But with so many styles to choose from it’s easy to be a little overwhelmed by all the choice out there.Rumour has it that almost 40%  of gifts bought by men for women at Christmas get returned to the shops come Boxing Day.

Black Pearl Knot Necklace 3212785 small1.Look through her existing jewellery…look out for favourite styles; delicate pendants, chunky bangles, layered necklaces … This will show the kind of jewellery she likes to wear. Try not to buy exact replicas though – just use this as inspiration.

2. What kind of clothes does she wear? The closer you can get to her style, the more of a hit your purchase will be. For example, if she wears v-necks to accentuate her cleavage she may like to have attention drawn to her chest – so a statement necklace or pretty pearls would be a good idea – and as a tip don’t buy her anything longer than a 20” chain.

3. Classic or Glam? Is she more of a casual dresser or does she like to get glammed up? This could be a good indication of how much jewellery she likes to wear. For casual dressers avoid too many diamonds or showy pieces – but indulge in these if your other half likes a bit of glamour!

4. Don’t think that expensive is always best! A handmade limited edition pair of earrings in her favourite colour can say more than a showy piece that doesn’t reflect her personal style. Does she like to wear matching ‘sets’ – It’s like the matching knickers and bra thing – go with it! The best jewellery websites group designs that go together to take the hard work out of it.

5. Colour Coordinating… If they wear a lot of a particular colour, try and match it – not necessarily the same but a hue that will complement it – this means they will be able to wear the piece easily with their current wardrobe.

6. Alternatively  play safe stylishly by selecting something that will go with a number of colours by sticking with a plain silver or gold piece – perhaps with a subtly quirky design.Tide Bangle

7. Don’t follow the crowd… Think about what will actually suit her, not what is fashionable. Wallflowers will hate anything too bling and those that love the limelight will loathe anything too demure.

8. Perfect Fit… Don’t make the classic mistake of buying something that doesn’t fit! For example, if she has very small wrists check that the standard bracelet length will fit her. Alternatively, if she has large wrists avoid bracelets that are too delicate, as they may not fit – in this case a necklace may be a safer idea.

9. The long and short of it… When it comes to earrings does she like long dangly ones or oversized studs? Don’t forget to check she has her ears pierced!

10. It’s the thought that counts – If all else fails remember the thing that will impress her the most is thoughtful consideration – that will always win you more brownie points than anything else!
