‘And the circus left town’ is the weird, wondeful and somewhat nostalgic title of the end of course show for the 14 students graduating from the Foundation Degree in Photography and Video at Leicester College. The show is the chance to show case their individuality and artistic abilities.

Throughout this two-year Higher Education course which is validated by the pretigious De Montfort University the students have undertaken professional and academic training in many areas of still and moving image production and this exhibition is the culmination of three months self-directed study at the end of this course.

This inspirational show is a real opportunity for the students to express their own interests and creativity. It’s a window into their world. On show is thought-provoking work of various styles, techniques & thematic concerns.

The exhibition runs from Monday 17th May until the Saturday 29th May 2010 at the Independent Arts Centre, 68-70 Humberstone Gate between the hours of 10.00am until 18.00pm. Check it out! You never know, one of these budding students could be the future of the world of visual arts!

Birmingham’s Museum of the Jewellery Quarter has won a top national tourism award – being named the best small visitor attraction in the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2010.

Located right in the heart of Birmingham’s world famous Jewellery Quarter, the museum was named Best Small Attraction in last year’s Heart of England Excellence Awards – a scheme celebrating the best tourist attractions in the region.

Two years ago it was named the third best free tourist attraction in Europe by TripAdvisor, behind the Pantheon in Rome and the National Gallery in London.

Racking up all these awards can only mean this is one for the 69 to visit list! Especially for any of you with a passion for the shiny stuff or an interest in history, we’re thinking its well worth a visit.

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Chair of the Birmingham Cultural Partnership, said: “This is a richly deserved award. The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter truly is one of Birmingham’s real gems and deserves this high profile national award.

“Our industrial and cultural heritage will play a key part in our final City of Culture bid and this wonderful museum brilliantly showcases Birmingham’s renowned jewellery and metalworking heritage.”

Now we here at 69 are classy healthy folk, but sadly there are times late on a Saturday night when we let our food morals slip and some hot juicy meat is all we crave. Thankfully food and drink writers Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham are on a mission to find the top kebab house and will be awarding the coveted WKD Golden Kebab Award to the best in each city. So we can still feel a little secure in our guilty pleasure.

The award will be based on challenging and extremely important criteria such as; appearance, distance to taxi rank, nearest pub/bar, queue factor, chilli sauce strength, flavour, chip appraisal, sit down options and of course, kebab breath-o-meter. The ten regional winners will then compete to win the prestigious national WKD Golden Kebab Award.

So, if you want to nominate your local shish supplier visit the WKD Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wkd. Every nomination enters a prize draw to win a Nintendo Wii – so get amongst it!

Judge, author and soon to be kebab expert Ben McFarland adds; “We really need kebab lovers to get on Facebook and tell us about the best kebab shops in town”.

To find out more about the WKD Golden Kebab Awards and to nominate your favourite kebab shop go to www.facebook.com/wkd.

The top ten kebab shops in each region will feature in the WKD guide to the best kebab shops in the UK, to be published later this year by Ben McFarland & Tom Sandham.

The WKD Golden Kebab Awards tour will stop at the following cities throughout the UK to crown the regional winners:

o Liverpool – Monday 10th May

o Manchester – Wednesday 12th May

o Leeds – Wednesday 19th May

o Birmingham – Thursday 10th June

Museums at Night, the annual after-hours celebration of UK culture, history and heritage, is back! Over the weekend of 14-16th May 2010, museums and galleries will be opening late and staging over 200 unique events. Definately a great chance for a great night out and exploring the culture and heritage on your doorstep.

For many people the idea of Museums at Night raises expectations of exhibits coming alive as they do in the Night at the Museum films, but who needs animatronic dinosaurs or rampaging museum miniatures when you can experience the thrill of being inside places whose very walls and collections contain the real stories of dramatic events?

Museums all over the region will be opening their doors at night with a really diverse selection of entertainment on offer as there are so many events to list we thought we would simply point you in the direction of a lovely pre made list just click on the link here www.culture24.org.uk/museumsatnight

“The Summer Sundae Song Club is open to anyone who enjoys singing and would like to say they have performed at Summer Sundae! We will be working on a handful of well known popular songs.”

Taking part is easy. Register by the 9th August 2010 by sending an email with your name, contact details, and a list of any previous singing experience to summersundaesongclub@gmail.com. Places are limited.

Stop the press! Kylie is indeed releasing another album. There is only a touch of sarcasm in that sentence as there is still much love for Kylie in 69 towers, even thought her last two albums could have been considered a waste of every ones time.

Kylie Minogue returns this June with a brand new single “All The Lovers”. From the snippet we have heard we have hope that this will be a huge summer anthem. ‘All The Lovers’ is the first single from her new studio album “Aphrodite” scheduled for release a week later, on July 5.

‘Aphrodite’ sees Kylie celebrating her dance-floor roots with Madonna producer Stuart Price on board. The list of songwriters includes Kylie, Stuart Price, Calvin Harris, Scissor Sister’s Jake Shears, Nerina Pallot and Keane’s Tim Rice-Oxley. Sounds like a pretty niffty line up to us.

Kylie said today: “The single was one of the last tracks to be written for the album. As I was recording it I knew that “All The Lovers” had to be the first single; it sums up the euphoria of the album perfectly. It gives me goose-bumps, so I’m really excited to hear what everyone thinks of it”.

Here at 69, we have our fingers crossed that ‘All The Lovers’ will be every thing we dreamed of and more.

Oh and heres the album cover, isn’t she beautiful?

Northern dance festival Creamfields are celebrating having scooped the award for ‘Festival Of The Year’ at the prestigious industry Music Week Awards at the Hilton Hotel in London. Creamfield’s win sees the dance fest beating off stiff competition from heavyweights Glastonbury, V Festival, Bestival and Global Gathering.

On receiving the award Cream CEO James Barton said: “We are thrilled and overwhelmed to win this prestigious award particularly when we were up against such world class festivals like Glastonbury and V. It highlights how far we’ve come over the last 12 years, and makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

This year the ‘Festival Of The Year’ category was opened up to the public for the first time with the shortlist assessed by a panel of judges who were looking out for excellent performance in everything from innovation, creativity and quality of service. This is the second award scooped by the dance festival in the last 6 months, having won ‘Best Dance Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards in November and follows the success of their sell out show last Summer which attracted a record breaking 60,000 people.

Creamfields will return to Daresbury in Cheshire on August Bank Holiday weekend with performances from the likes of Tiësto, David Guetta, Leftfield, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Paul van Dyk, Eric Prydz and Ferry Corsten to name a few.
