Tom Connall gives us a rundown on what games to look out for this year:

If you’re like me and have a drawer full of Yule-time gaming number 1’s destined for eBay here are a few tit-bits of what’s on the horizon for casual gamers to start filling you piggy-bank for in 2010.

Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (all consoles)

Fans of the childishly addictive and wonderfully multi-player ‘Lego’ games, who have left the ‘Death Star’ and ‘Temple of doom’ a pile of smouldering (little plastic) pieces, will be pleased to know there is something magical set to ‘Apperate’ onto our shelves in late March.

That’s right! You and your friends and family (or solo, if preferred), will be able to board the Hogwarts Express and join Harry and friends on a very turbulent 4 years of Wizard School. Whilst a student expect to attend lessons, play Quiditch, cast spells and explore the grounds of Hogwarts. Oh and don’t forget you will have your life threatened at every turn by ‘He Who Must Not Be Named’s lifelong pursuit to wipe you of the face of the earth! Wands at the ready for this greatly anticipated addition to the ‘Lego’ series! (Due for release 26/03/2010, R.R.P £34.99)

Sonic Classic Collection (Nintendo DS/DSi)

Whoever would have thought the trials and tribulations of a sneaker wearing, bright blue, ring kleptomaniac hedgehog, would have become one of the world’s most recognised computer game characters of all time, selling over 50 million games. Mastered only by the fat red and blue Italian donned with slightly perverse moustache and white gloves, who recently gave our thumbs fresh blisters with the likes of ‘Mario Kart’, and ‘New Super Mario Wii’.

Fans of Sonic and members of the new ‘Touch Generation’ of the DS will soon be able to take a trip down memory lane, when ‘Mr Spikey’ spins his way back into our hearts with,’ Sonic Classic Collection’, due for release mid March.

Prince of Persia: The forgotten sands. (PS3/ XBOX360)

He sure has come a long way since his tinny, slightly pixelated debut in 1989. He’s now got style, tons of sex appeal, kick ass moves and he’s 3D! Yes he sure does know how to move with the times, and is set to fly-kick us into the new decade by wowing us again in May with the next instalment in the ‘Sand of Time’ series. Set between ‘The sands of Time’ and ‘The warrior Within’, ‘The forgotten Sands’ is promised to thrill gamers with stunning, ‘Blockbuster’ style visuals and mind blowing abilities to control time and nature. If you’re a fan of the previous Prince of Persia and the Prince of Persia franchise, expect a real gaming treat, and a deeper insight into the life and times of our favourite Arabian action hero.

(Due for release 28/05/2010, RRP £49.99)

Now this is possibly the most tenuous link to a computer game we have seen but it amused us enough to pass the information on. Apparently the folks at Capcom (responsible for the Resident Evil and Street Fighter series) carried out a survey of gamers greatest desire to help promote their new Game Dark Void (released on the 22nd January.) Predictably the out come was ‘more sex please’ we feel that if you carried out a survey for most things and asked what would your greatest desire be, most people would say they wanted more sex.

Personal jet packs came in second, followed by time travel, laser pistols and Artificial Intelligence computers. And jet packs is what leads us to Dark Void in which the central character uses a jet pack to fly around a 3D world.

Apparently film rights to the game have already been snapped up by Brad Pitt and Brad is expected to strap on the jet pack himself in the title role later this year.

When we asked Capcom if a new sexcentric game was on the cards they had this to say “It’s definitely not the kind of thing Capcom has considered creating, but I’m sure someone, somewhere, has something in development that will blow our… minds.”

That’s a shame, we will just have to make do with some good old fashioned porn.

Some of you will still be suffering the post Christmas and New Years bank balance and are thinking of things to do when spending the night in. I say feed your Xbox (tee hee) or your Wii and get some quality gaming in during these winter months. We have already had a look at New Super Mario Bros. and with the help of Tom Connall we will draw your attention to Modern Warfare 2.

Easily one of the most highly anticipated ‘shoot-em-up’ games of all time, ‘Infinity Wards’ Modern Warfare 2 does not fail to quench the thirst of its legions of already blood thirsty fans.

Set immediately after the first game you are strapped into the boots of Ranger Joseph Allen, Private 1st class, stationed in Afghanistan. After a concise but informative tutorial, to get MW ‘newbs’ up to speed, you are promptly ushered with your ‘Band of Bothers’ into the back of waiting jeeps, bound for a war shredded city and thrust into the cross-hairs of a hoard of insurgent Afghan militants. Nice!

Players will experience much of the same action packed game play as in MW1, with the added bonus of a whole armoury of upgraded weapons. Look forward to thermal scoped rifles, heart monitor screens and ‘Predator Missiles’ (that’s a missile dropped from a passing jet that you get to steer right into your enemy’s laps, KABOOM!)

The storyline is short but intense so don’t expect to be able to put your guard down for a second, and existing fans can look forward to some surprise encounters with old friends.

As most gamers will already know, the ‘story mode’ is only an entrée for this games true potential. MW 1 was renowned for its phenomenal online multiplayer experience, pale in comparison to the possibilities this little puppy offers. In-depth maps, greater fire-power and new kill streak perks are just a handful of the treats in store when you patch yourself in with thousands of other players from around the globe.

This game really got me asking the question, what next? Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long to find out! Keep them coming Infinity Ward!

Modern Warefare 2 is available on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC from all good games store RRP £54.99

All of us here at 69 towers own a Wii, some of us use it for exercise, others use it to take out aggression by shooting poor zombies who only want to be loved whilst others may have spent a little too long playing Mario Kart and now believe this is the way that all people should drive.

Any way, no matter what you use your Wii for I demand that you go out tomorrow and purchase New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Its Mario back in all his 2D glory, if you played New Super Mario Bros. on the DS then you will have a pretty good idea of what to expect. The aim of the game is that age old challenge of rescuing Princess Peach by traveling from the left hand side of the screen to the right by jumping on goombas, traveling down warp pipes and eating mushrooms to power up. But this time Nintendo have mixed things up with four player simultaneous play. Four people can take on each level either to help each other out or to try and whoop each others asses. I know which way I will be playing.
